BONDABLE TEFLON ® AND PTFE

PTFE can be etched with a sodium ammonia or sodium naphthalene etch so that its surface is chemically modified for adhesion to various substrates using ordinary commercial grade epoxies. When etched for bonding, PTFE can be used as chute liners, vessel linings, and glued to processing surfaces to make a non-stick, low coefficient of friction unit. It is important to use the correct temperature epoxy. The epoxy’s heat resistance must be matched to the application environment. If low temperature epoxy is used in a high temperature application, the epoxy will fail and the PTFE will separate from the substrate. Fluoro-Plastics is one of the few companies in the United States which actually stocks bondable PTFE sheets and rolls in standard thicknesses. Also, Fluoro-Plastics offers etching services on all thicknesses of PTFE.

CUSTOM

CUSTOM PROFILES TEFLON ® AND PTFE

Surf Technologies is the world leader in the design and manufacture of custom profiles, from special configuration slides for copiers, to continuous tadpole gasketing, to wiper blades and special molds for vulcanizing rubber into inflatable weather stripping (a substitute for an aluminum mold). PTFE profiles work where other materials fail: PTFE’s high permeation resistance, low creep, smooth surface and high voltage dielectric properties are ideal for many unique applications requiring the range of performance characteristics only PTFE offers. For example, Surf Technologies has extruded wiper blade profiles, retrofitted insulating profiles in high voltage applications, made slide rails for copiers and we developed and produced many other unusual configurations. If you require a special PTFE configuration, let Surf Technologies machine a prototype to fine tune the configuration, then build an extrusion die for production quantities or application lengths. Protective and confidential agreements are honored.

EXTRUDED-1

EXTRUDED TUBE TEFLON ® AND PTFE

Surf Technologies is a leader in the manufacture of heavy walled PTFE tube, both in standard inch sizes and in AWG sizes. Tube is used in fluid handling applications for high temperature acids and caustics or where contamination is an issue, such as in wire braided hose. In applications where PTFE's excellent insulating properties are needed heavy walled tube is the shape of choice, e.g. in spark plugs for stationary generators, coaxial spacers, connectors,. Because drilling a precise hole in longer PTFE lengths is impossible, extruded tube is the best way to insure uniform wall thickness throughout the length of the tube. Various fillers are available to modify the properties of PTFE to meet application requirements. Meets ASTM 1710-08

GUIDE

GUIDE RAILS, RECTANGULAR BARS AND WEAR STRIPS TEFLON ® AND PTFE

Fluoro-Plastics/Surf Technologies stocks standard guide rail shapes: cover bar, chain guide, snap-ons, half rounds, and j legs in various sizes for applications where temperatures exceed 180 deg. F. All shapes are extruded from granular PTFE, which is the toughest kind of PTFE and is ideal in conveyancing systems to quickly and easily move products and materials with no breakage, reduced chatter and noise and little downtime on the line. Virgin PTFE is FDA approved. It is non-stick, has zero water absorption, withstands corrosives, is non-aging, easy to cut, machine and install, and has good flexibility and a long service life. PTFE guide rails and wear strips will operate in the harshest chemical environments and in temperatures from -350 deg. F to over 500 deg. F, making them ideal for food processing, sterilization applications, chemical processing industries, cosmetics industry and many other high-tech industries where products have to travel over or along metal rails through harsh environments at high temperatures. PTFE guide rails and wear strips will provide thousands of hours of continuous, economical service where all of the melt-processible plastics fail. Standard lengths are 5 feet and 10 feet, but non-standard lengths are available. Fluoro-Plastics stocks an extensive array of rectangular bar sizes for use as a slide surface in ways and slots.

MACHINE PARTS TEFLON ® AND PTFE

Because of its unique molecular structure, granular PTFE does not melt. It cannot be molded into complex forms like other plastics. However, it is easily machined on all standard equipment, including the most advanced CNC machining equipment. PTFE can be cut, bored, milled and turned using standard tooling. Normally PTFE is machined to tolerances of about plus or minus .005 inches. While closer tolerances are occasionally required, they usually are not necessary. PTFE is very resilient which allows machined parts to conform to most working dimensions. A part can sometimes be press-fitted at lower cost than doing final machining to exact size. When closer tolerances are required, it is essential to use stress-relieved products. Fluoro-Plastics offers complete annealing services to industry standards for all stock shapes we manufacture. Tolerances of plus or minus .001 inches can be held with Fluoro-Plastics shapes that have been properly annealed at our factories. Fluoro-Plastics has a complete machine shop to turn out finished parts from prototypes up to production quantities. Fluoro-Plastics has been fabricating and machining PTFE for over 50 years. Call Fluoro-Plastics with any design questions or send is a drawing by fax or e-mail and let our experience work for you. See ASTM D 3297 for machining specifications.

MODIFIED

MODIFIED TEFLON ® AND PTFE

Fluoro-Plastics offers modified PTFE basic shapes and machined parts. The new material offer engineering products with higher permeation resistance, lower creep, smoother surfaces and better high-voltage dielectric properties. Modified PTFE has the same performance characteristics of standard PTFE, viz. exceptional chemical resistance, high and low temperature capabilities, anti-stick performance and low friction.

Compared to standard PTFE modified PTFE displays remarkably enhanced performance characteristics. For example, the tensile strength and elongation of ordinary PTFE is 1500-2000 psi and 100-200%, whereas modified PTFE’s tensile strength is 4500 psi and its elongation at break is 500%. However, high voltage dielectric strength is where modified PTFE stands out: it is rated at 5200 volts per mil (at 1 mil), whereas standard PTFE is rated at only 500 volts per mil. In thicker sections the high voltage dielectric strength decreases, but not dramatically; Fluoro-Plastics offers modified PTFE which has been tested in 2.2, 3, 5, 8 and 10 mil thickness. The high voltage dielectric strength varied from slightly over 3,000 volts per mil at 2.2 mils to slightly over 2,000 volts per mil at 10 mils.

Also, parts and shapes made of modified PTFE can be assembled by heat welding and shaped by thermoforming. They can be joined without adhesives using moderate pressure in an oven, developing bonds with strength approaching that of the parts themselves. Welded sections can be subsequently thermoformed with no significant loss of strength. One of the simplest, most economical applications for modified PTFE is to make rectangular bags. A thin sheet can be folded over itself and heat sealed along two or three sides to make a bag for storing liquids and materials which must be protected from potential contaminants, e.g. in environmental or pharmaceutical sampling applications.

Fluoro-Plastics offers modified PTFE in skived sheets and rolls from one mil thick up to .125 inches thick, up to 48 inches wide, or slit to order. All rolls are packaged on a three inch cardboard core, or a three inch PVC core, to customer request.

COMPOUNDED

REINFORCED PTFE & TEFLON®

Various fillers can be added to PTFE to enhance certain characteristics, e.g. Glass fiber (high wear resistance, good electrical, low friction), graphite (low friction, excellent chemical resistance, high creep resistance), carbon fiber (high wear resistance, high load resistance, high bend resistance), glass fiber and Molybdenum Disulfide (high wear resistance, low friction, high creep resistance), Bronze (high wear resistance, heat dissipation). In some industries filled PTFE has become the standard, such as the bearing pad industry, where various percentages of glass fiber are added to the base PTFE resin to create an extremely tough, weatherproof, interface material which can be cut or stamped into configurations to match the dimensions of the opposing surfaces. Fluoro-Plastics has been producing compounded PTFE products and shapes since compounding was invented. Tell us about your application problem and let Fluoro-Plastics' half century of experience work for you. Conforms to ASTM D 4745.
